Extract from the fifth book in the series:
Aiden's refusal to get involved in managerial mind games soon thwarted any attempts to overrule the Giants play before the match had even started. Justin found himself quite wound up by some of the things that were said, but he had to let it go over his head, knowing that he couldn't take matters into his own hands, although he would have dearly loved to!
On many occasions he had been questioned about Aiden's decisions: his simple reply had been that he trusted Aiden to do the right thing, and to get their players to follow suit. He was lucky to have such a master psychologist to manage the team, one reporter said, and Justin laughed, asking him why the man thought that he had Aiden on long term contract? When they asked if there was ever a manager-owner fall-out, Justin laughed again and replied that Aiden soon got him to see the error of his ways. To which, everyone in the room had also laughed.
The Giants were tipped to go straight through the Championship and into the Premier League the following season, especially given their pre-season win over PSG - something that made Justin's head spin. He'd been so focused on FA Cup success that he'd sidelined his team's league successes. Of course, having a top 5 finish in the Premier League put them automatically into European football, and that was another prized possession Justin wanted.
There were now many months between their first FA Cup fixture and the start of the season, giving an opportunity for their new signings to find their feet in the team before their true firepower could be released. Aiden had come to him just last week with his plans for the season, and Justin hadn't found one flaw. There was the unknown factor of how the team would fare between injuries and illnesses, but every team had that uncertainty in front of them for a brand new season.
With the increased members of the team open to them, squad selection certainly was tougher, but there were also more options available and that would come in handy more than once this season Justin felt sure.
He'd arranged further sponsorship; another contract for their home and away kit with a new manufacturer; further promotional exercises for himself and the team. Everything was falling neatly into place. He had an even stronger squad, the best manager in the league and a stadium of beyond regulation proportions – the scene was set for the Giants to win, and win big. Justin realised for the first time, the odds were tipping in their favour – was that a good omen or not?
The team had another, local, friendly arranged for the next evening. Having inspected the pitch beforehand, Justin couldn't help but feel thrilled about how their season would go.
